Block Busters Of 2006

1. "Rang De Basanti" Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and starring Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Siddharth and English actress Alice Patten, "Rang De Basanti" was a tour de force of Indian filmmaking. The plot centers around a young woman (Patten) who travels to India to make a documentary about Indian freedom fighters. Over the course of her project, the young students who star in her film transition from apathetic jokesters to passionate patriots. Keep a box of tissues at hand for the film's heartbreaking conclusion.
   
2. "Vivah" This sweet and light film follows the trials and tribulations of a newly engaged couple (played by Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapoor). The film's simple story resonated with movie-goers and helped establish Shahid Kapoor as a box office topper.
   
3. "Omkara" Vishal Bhardwaj's "Omkara" is the best film of 2006 (narrowly edging out "Rang de Basanti"). "Omkara" is an Indian take on Shakespeare's "Othello" and is set in rough and tumble Uttar Pradesh amongst a gang of criminals and politicians. "Omkara" is probably best known for two things: Saif Ali Khan's tremendous turn as the villian, Langda, and the hit item number "Beedi."
   
4. "Lage Raho Munnabhai" Definitely the feel-good movie of the year. Sanjay Dutt stars in this sequel to "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S." as a lovable gangster who takes lessons from the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi in order to win over the girl of his dreams.
   
5. "Dhoom 2" No list of the ten best Indian movies of 2006 could  be complete without "Dhoom 2." This mega hit starred Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu and Abhishek Bachchan in an international game of cops and robbers. The chemistry between Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan was nothing short of red-hot and the film's soundtrack was one of the best of the year.
   
6. "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" Marriage, seduction and adultery are themes explored by Karan Johar's "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna." Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta and Shah Rukh Khan, "KANK" is admittedly a copy of the Hollywood film "Closer," but considering that "KANK" features Amitabh Bachchan in a role that can only be described as "horny old man," is there any doubt as to which version is more entertaining?
   
7. "Fanaa" "Fanaa" marked the return after many years absence of Indian superstar actress Kajol. In "Fanaa" she is paired opposite Aamir Khan as a blind girl who unknowingly falls in love with a terrorist. When her sight is miraculously restored, she sees him for what he really is .
   
8. "Don: The Chase Begins Again" This list of the top ten Indian films of 2006 is rounded out by one of the year's biggest budget films. "Don: The Chase Begins Again" is a remake of the classic Hindi film "Don" and features megastar Shah Rukh Khan alongside Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Kareena kapoor .
